Self-Improvement – Enhance Your Inner Communication Skills and Feel Empowered

We generally think of communication as being external between people.  Yet there is another very important way we communicate and that is the inner dialogue we have with ourselves. No one besides us is aware that this is going on.  Depending on how we talk to ourselves this inner dialogue will empower us or limit us based on what we say to ourselves.

Do you talk to yourself in an accepting positive way or are there many negative messages that pop up in your mind?  If you want to increase your self esteem work on strengthening your inner dialogue.

Self Improvement

1. Stop and listen to yourself

How do you talk to yourself?  Have you been aware of the words you use? Are you in the habit of putting yourself down?  When something doesn’t go as well as you hoped do you criticize yourself? These are common ways that many people inwardly talk to themselves.

2.  Eliminate the use of always and never – Those two words are absolutes and they are very limiting.

For instance, if you say to yourself ” I always mess up” there is no room for the times when that did not happen. Listen for other words that you may be in the habit of using where you put yourself down.

3. Substitute realistic self talk

Look at what you say to yourself from a behavioral perspective. Are you looking at the specific situation behaviorally or are you personalizing it by putting yourself down.  If you look at what you said or did  from a behavioral perspective you might be saying to yourself ‘ I wish I had handled this differently’, however if you are in the habit of taking things personally you may well be  saying  to yourself ‘I am so stupid.  I always mess things up’.  That is a big difference. In the first you are realistic and empowering in the latter you are deflating your self esteem.

4. Focus on changing your negative self talk

It takes practice to change negative self talk. We all have the ability to substitute healthier inner dialogue with the benefit of increased self confidence and joy in living.
