When You Know It’s Time For Drug Intervention

One of the hardest things in the world is watching a loved one destroy their lives with drug and alcohol addiction, which is why intervention is necessary. The addict does not realize, or refuses to realize that there is a problem because they rationalize, or they compare themselves to other addicts and convince themselves that it is not so bad. Family, friends and loved ones often watch helplessly as someone they love dives further into addiction. There is something that can be done, however.

It used to be thought that the addict must reach out for help of their own accord in order for them to get treatment. This is an outdated notion and drug intervention and alcohol intervention are becoming more common. If you are tired of watching someone you love ruin their lives with drugs and/or alcohol then you will know it is time to take action. It is time to realize that the addict needs to accept responsibility for their actions, but you must bring this about in a positive and uplifting way. It is best to seek professional advice and help before attempting an intervention because things can go awry if things get ugly along the way.

Loved ones adapt an attitude over time that the addict will one day realize how they are destroying their lives and the lives of those around them. You may not be able to change the addict, but you can change your attitude about the addiction. Having a positive attitude is imperative during this time. The intervention team should stay focused and positive when dealing with the addict.

You will normally know when the time is right, not because of anything the addict does but because you just decide you have had enough. Addictions ruin families and communities along with the addicts. If your heart is breaking watching you and your loved one go through it, then it is time. Often, it is the loving intervention of a friend or family member that convinces the addict to seek treatment. Your decision to get help for the addict may be the only thing that will turn the tide.

When you decide to act, it is best to seek the help of a professional. It is not just the addict who must change behaviors but the loved ones as well. The intervention team must stay strong and positive in order to bring about a change. Guilt is an emotion that we often burden ourselves with unnecessarily. Do not feel guilty about wanting to help a loved one and do not accept guilt from the addict. The intervention professional will be able to guide you and teach you what should be done in order to achieve success.

Intervention is very often successful. In fact, 92% of addicts who have someone intervene seek help. Those are some impressive numbers. There is something you can do to improve your life and the life of the addict. It just takes a little knowledge and a positive attitude.
