Anger Management Counseling – What Happens In Counseling?

There are many different options for dealing with anger that is causing a problem in your life. One option is to see a psychologist for individual anger management counseling.

What happens when someone sees goes to anger management counseling?

In you first session you can expect to be asked these questions?

  • what problems is anger is causing at home and at work?
  • what has happened for you decide to get help for anger control now?
  • what problems is poor anger control causing with partner, children, friends?
  • your history of anger problems
  • a brief medical/ psychological history
  • you will be assessed for symptoms of anxiety and depression (common with anger)
  • how you are coping with everyday life
  • any criminal history or current charges related to poor anger control
  • what you want to get out of counseling

You may be asked to complete a few short quizzes about yourself. The first session is mainly to meet each other and exchange information. In future individual anger management counseling sessions you can expect to talk about anger incidents that have occurred and what your thoughts and feelings were. This is how you will learn about your own anger and the best ways of controlling anger.

As you talk over past anger incidents you will be asked questions to help you understand yourself and your behaviour better. You will also be taught effective anger management skills that you can practice. These skills will give you better anger control. You may be asked to do some written work between sessions. This speeds up learning and reduced the amount of time needed attending anger management counseling. The more effort you put in the faster you will get results. If new problems occur then these can be discussed in sessions.

This is one reason anger management classes are not suitable for everyone as they do not help with problems or treat other conditions, they only teach skills. They are helpful, but many people need treatment for anxiety and depression which a psychologist can provide.

Individual anger management counseling with a psychologist is a good choice if you have a history of abuse, trauma, substance abuse or other mental health conditions.
