Self Limiting Beliefs – The Enemy Of Success

‘Children are remarkable for their intelligence and ardor, for their
curiosity, their intolerance of shams, the clarity and ruthlessness of their
vision.

Aldous Huxley

Have you ever asked a child what they want to be when they grow up? Recently I asked a group of children aged 5 – 9 years of age what they wanted to be when they grew up, and their answers included doctor, lawyer, pilot, nurse, teacher, builder and a Mother. The above quote confirms this. Children have vision and they dream and their dreams have no limits.

So what happens between the ages of 5 and 25, when the boy who wanted to be a pilot now settles for working the till in the local grocery shop? Life put limits on his dream. Maybe out of the goodness of his heart, his teacher told him in school that he would have to be very clever to be a pilot, and it may not be the best occupation for him. His parents, to avoid disapointment if he did not achieve it, maybe told him to aim for something slightly easier. When he looked around his family, maybe he noted that none of them had ever gone onto to 3rd lever education, so he figured that he couldn’t either.

The point is that limits are set on us as children and we carry them on into out adult life, even if we do not realise it. You have beliefs about the world and the way it works. Your experiences in life have established deep-seated notions about what you are capable of doing and what is impossible for you.

Some of your ideas may be valid; some may be wildly off the mark, having perhaps been inherited from a family member or picked up through a case of burnt fingers before you were not old enough to examine them objectively. Either way, your beliefs can affect our decisions profoundly, even is you do not believe it.

Limitations are actually a thing of the mind. In reality you have none. You can do anything if you make up your mind to do it. Determination always finds a way around obstacles.

Henry Ford once said, “If you think you can…. or if you think you can’t…you’re right!” It all depends on what you believe about yourself.

Dream today without limits and believe that you can achieve whatever you set your mind to.

Are you stuck in a rut?
