Getting The Most Out Of Life By Defeating Procrastination
What is procrastination exactly? Why does it have the power to keep majority of us from achieving what we want in life?
In fact, the word procrastination literally means to leave something “for tomorrow.”
Procrastination actually comes from the Latin words pro (for) and cras (tomorrow).
In other words, procrastination is the postponement of carrying out a task that you know you should do.
Now regardless of what your parents or teachers told you, the actual fact is there are no “born” procrastinators.
Procrastination is actuality is just a skill that needs to be learnt, accept and develop. Now what’s disturbing to know is that is it a skill which is easy to learn, but hard to unlearn.
Like all other habits, procrastinating is also a habit that needs to be learnt one step at a time. And that is how you are going to unlearnt it. One step at a time!
Reading articles and books on how to eliminate procrastination will only help you to a certain extent. However if you were to read and forget about it, it will do you no good.
Therefore, my best advice is to put what you know into practice and determine for yourself (after you have put those teachings into action) whether they are worth doing or not.
Try to make a commitment and a promise to yourself to act on all the tips you find here.
In some cases, you may not truly agree with the things I say; now that’s fine. However, what I will advise you to do is to carry out the tips given here first and track your results.
If you see no great improvements in your life, you can always stop doing them.
You will never know whether it works until you try, isn’t it?
I believe you will agree with me that procrastination is what keeps most people from getting the best out of their lives.
If so, why do we continue to procrastinate even though we have already recognize it as an enemy?
Well, I think there are several reasons to it:
- Fear of failure
- Fear of success
- Indecision
- Over analyzing
- Disorganization
- Fatigue
- Depression
- Stress
Like what I have mentioned earlier, procrastination is a habit and a skill learnt over time. Therefore, it just makes sense that if you wish to truly defeat procrastination; you will need to unlearn those bad habits and replaces them with more resourceful ones.
Of course, all these unlearning and learning processes require you to make a strong commitment and constant disciplined effort to truly eradicate it.
Below are some tips you will want to employ in your daily life:
Take full responsibility for your failures.
Despite what majority of the people think, we are not victims of our circumstances. I believe I have mentioned this not less than ten times in my articles.
My point is, unless you start taking control of your life and be fully 100% responsible for whatever happens, you will always be on the lookout to blame your failures on other people or external circumstances.
This is one of the bad habits most procrastinators have. Therefore if you continue to tell yourself that your failures are beyond your control, so will be your successes. Also, embrace yourself for a lifetime of procrastination.
“Just Do It!”
This verse was actually first started by Nike and became pretty famous in the self development field too.
This is also the exact phrase my mentor keeps repeating to me whenever I tried to find some lame excuses to explain why I was not able to complete some tasks he had assigned me to do.
If you have noticed, all successes come to you when you are committed to them. When you are determined to get what you want and is willingly do whatever it takes (honestly and ethically) to reach your goals, you will definitely get what you desire.
The formula to attaining success in whatever you do is
- Focus
- Self discipline
- Confidence
- Determination
Keep your priorities right
Learn to adopt a different behavior or attitude from the one you are using now.
As I mentioned before, insanity is to keep doing the same thing and expect a different results.
Therefore if you are finding yourself fighting a losing battle against procrastination, it is time to look at your strategies and reorganize your battle plan.
Start making list of your priorities at work also make a commitment to accomplish at least one of the activities in your high priority list everyday.
“It’s never too late to be the person you could have been.”

The best time to start is always NOW!
