What Is This Talk Of University On Wheels?
I first heard the phrase “university-on-wheels” from one of America’s top business speakers – Brian Tracy. What an odd but fascinating concept. He was referring to the value we can get listening to audio books while driving. And guess where I first heard his phrase “university on wheels”? I was driving to work.
When you think about time as a precious and finite resource, most people waste as many as 2 or more hours every single day commuting to work. Most folks are not using their commute time to learn anything. They leave their minds on a sort of autopilot the entire time commuting to work. Many listen to the radio while driving, which is hardly a serious learning environment.
Now here’s an interesting and promising fact. Did you know that listening to the right professional audio books each and every day as you commute to and from work will be equivalent to a full university education within two to three years?!
It’s true!
Look at it like this. For some university degree programs, students spend no more than 10 hours weekly attending their lectures. After a few years, they are given their university degrees. Now what do you think they do during these 10 hours each week? You guessed it – they listen to their lecturers!
You can get the exact same value from just listening to the right audio books in the field or area of expertise you want to learn about. You obviously won’t receive a degree certificate after you complete your chosen audio books, but you will have expanded your mental faculty by increasing your knowledge base.
By using your commute wisely, you will become an increasingly knowledgeable and interesting individual. Learn another language, learn about history and biographies, business and finance, religion and spirituality, and a wealth of other fascinating and useful subjects; all with audio books.
So why in the world would you continue to “waste” valuable time on your daily commute to work daydreaming or listening to the radio when you can use the same hours to learn a new skill, a new business idea, a new profession, etc?
To get started on an audio book listening program, ask yourself what new skill or expertise you would either love to learn or feel would most benefit you in your current and future endeavors. When you know what you want to learn, go online and research the audio books in that subject area to craft your own curriculum.
Once you find what you consider is the proper series of audio books, you are ready to start your own individual university-on-wheels program.
Audio books come in CD, cassette and downloadable formats, which gives you options to choose from.
Even if you take the bus to work, you can still benefit from your “university on wheels” program with a portable CD, cassette or Mp3 player. This can most helpful for those professional audio books that include an instructional booklet.
If you dedicate the time to follow through with your university-on-wheels program, you will very soon become an expert in that area of knowledge.
All thanks to your university-on-wheels with audio books.
